The authors set the aim to describe the settlement names of the Árpád Era in Győr county and outline their system. The toponymic corpus examined by the authors has been taken from a monumental work by György Györffy (Az Árpád-kori Magyarország történeti földrajza [Historical geography of Hungary in the Árpád Era]. 2. Budapest, 1987).
The study is divided into two parts: the first is a kind of etymological dictionary in which the early Old Hungarian settlement names of Győr county are analyzed. Based on this, the second part contains a typological description these settlement names.
Apart from the earliest documents of 1332−1337, the date of the first lists of settlement names registered by the Church, as well as their assumed etymologies, other problems of interpretation and issues of historical phonetics concerning the spelling of particular items are also raised.
The typology suggested by Hoffmann (István Hoffmann, Helynevek nyelvi elemzése [The linguistic analysis of toponyms]. Debrecen, 1993), used by the authors, distinguishes four levels of analysis: the functional-semantic level, the lexical-morphological level, the syntagmatic level, and the etymological level. The authors present the system and the types of the settlement names on this basis, i.e. according to their functional, structural, and etymological aspects. The functional-semantic analysis is aimed at revealing the motifs of name-giving by showing the characteristic features of the referent which may have motivated it. In the lexical-morphological analysis some names are examined from the aspect of their linguistic style (words and those morphemes which could have had a role in the formation of the name in question). The aim of the etymological examination is to disclose the circumstances under which the names emerged and their forms changed. Here the authors take into account the grammatical regularities of word formation that worked at shaping common appellatives as well as toponyms.
In the appendix at the end of the book there are tables which summarize the results of certain analytical levels. Besides, the reader will also find maps showing the names from to the perspective of their etymological analysis.
